A Diagram of Universal Darwinism

Josh Levent, after listening to our podcast episodes on universal darwinism (part 1, part2), created the following diagram in an attempt to capture the basic idea:

So I think this is pretty close to what I had in mind. I need to think about it more. I’m not sure I actually consider Naive Bayes or the normal equations to be part of universal darwinism at all. That is one of the ‘open questions.’

But he is making a really interesting point here that I essentially broke down variation and selection algorithms by two axes: heuristics vs. explanatory knowledge and narrow vs open-ended knowledge. He’s also correct that I am not sure there is anything in quadrant 1, that I can think of anyhow.
